Techniques for Removing Stump from Your Yard

Are tree stumps present in your yard, taking up valuable space for the landscaping project you so wanted to start? Whether you just recently chopped off a tree or moved into a new house with a stump in the nice yard, tree stumps are hard to clear out and remove from the ground.

Before you call a local tree removal service company or buy your own set of equipment to remove the stump, there is one thing you should do first–assess the condition of the tree stump. What is the size of the stump? Smaller stumps are easier to remove than bigger ones. What kind of tree does the stump belong to? You should know that deciduous tree roots are shallow and run long and deep underground so removing a stump of it may cost you your whole garden.

Assessing a tree stump would help you decide which kind of removal method you could do to successfully remove the eyesore that is the tree stump from your yard. Here are the most common methods of tree stump removal:

Stump Grinders

Stump grinders are heavy-duty machines you could use to grind the stump and turn them into little pieces. Stump grinders are expensive investments, which is why there are companies that allow you to rent them for as long as you need. Stump grinders are dangerous equipment and should only be operated by someone who is knowledgeable in running it.

Grubbing

This method asks for manual labor as grubbing requires you to dig out your stump from the ground. Measure two feet out from your stump and dig a trench several feet deep. After, dig under the stump, cutting out the roots using a chainsaw, an ax, or any equipment that would help free the stump for removal.

Burning

Burning a tree stump right after tree removal is done by drilling several deep holes on the stump and filling it with potassium nitrate dissolved in hot water. Cover the holes with scrap wood and light it with fire. The fire from the wood would eventually ignite the stump, turning it into ashes. This method, however, poses danger so you have to put in extra care. It would be best to have an emergency fire extinguisher nearby just in case it doesn’t go well.

Rotting It Out

Old tree stumps are easier to remove than young ones. Simply drill deep holes into the stump and fill it with high-nitrogen substance and water. This will eventually soften the stump from the inside out, allowing you to manually chip off the pieces of the stump.

You can take out a stump yourself. Well, that depends on your skill, knowledge and physical ability. If you think you can do it manually by hand, just make sure you have the right tools. If you want to use machine equipment, make sure that your investment is worth it. Or if you think hiring a tree removal service company is the best way to go, make sure to only call credible professionals. You wouldn’t want to hurt your yard or garden over one tree stump.
