How You Can Prevent Your Tree From Becoming Sick

Sick trees are something that you will want to avoid because there is always a chance that the illness is too far gone for the tree to be saved.  Fortunately, there are a number of preventative measures that you can take to avoid sickness.  Of course, these steps will not stop all sickness as there are some diseases and problems that you cannot fully prevent.

Avoid Injuring The Tree

When you work in your yard, you need to be careful around the trees.  You do not want to cause any damage to the tree because this will make them more prone to illness.  Open wounds on your trees are how a disease will infiltrate and the open wounds can attract insects which cause other issues.  If you are using a weed trimmer in your yard, you need to be careful around the trees and it is recommended that you not get too close to the trunk.

You should not only take note of the trunk when you are working in the yard.  You also need to ensure that you avoid damaging the roots of the tree.  Damage to the roots can be lethal to your trees and is a good way for root rot to start.  If you have exposed roots in your garden, you have to be careful when you use the lawn mower.

Make Sure You Are Watering Correctly

The amount of water that your tree gets will play a role in its health.  If your tree does not get enough water, it will start to drop leaves out of season to limit the stress it is under.  However, if your tree is getting too much water, the roots could become ill and this will lead to sickness.

The amount of water that your tree needs will vary on the species and the weather in your area.  The soil drainage will also need to be considered when looking at watering.  If the soil does not drain correctly, your tree could be sitting in a waterlogged soil which suffocates the roots and will cause sickness.  If this is the case, you will need to install additional drainage into the garden.

Do Not Forget To Prune Your Trees

A lot of people wait until there is a problem before they prune their trees.  This is a mistake and you need to regularly prune your trees to ensure that they are healthy.  Regular pruning will also help your trees grow better, but only if they are pruned correctly and at the correct time of year.

It is recommended that you hire a professional to prune your trees for you.  These professionals will know the correct pruning techniques and when the trees should be pruned.  However, if you notice any broken or dead branches, you should consider pruning them yourself because they need to be removed as soon as possible.  If these branches are not removed that open wounds from the damaged branches could allow a disease to take hold and the disease that killed the dead branch will be allowed to spread.
